    Sustainability

    March 04, 2022 / by AirX Utility Surveyors Inc / 0 Comment

AirX in concert with its sub-consultants, is cognizant of the principles of Sustainability within our industry. We make a commitment on every job and within our workforce to achieve environmental awareness and sensitivity.

    Waste Reduction and Recycling

AirX has changed out HID (High-Intensity Discharge) Bulbs and replaced them with LED (Light Emitting Diode) bulbs for all our Beacon Lights on our trucks and equipment. This not only reduces our footprint by using considerably less energy but is also much safer and longer-lasting. Arrowboards also use LED lights to create sign messages. Batteries used on arrowboards have been replaced with Lithium Polymer Deep Cycle Batteries. While these batteries are more expensive, they hold a better charge and last much longer (as much as two years longer than the standard lead-acid batteries), thereby cutting waste by 1/3. Of course, all our arrowboards use solar to charge batteries. Gas-powered generators used for night lighting are being phased out and replaced with Yeti Goal Zero Power Station (Portable Electric Power Supply Units). Currently, AirX is investigating a process to reuse and reface older traffic control signs in hopes of recycling them and saving money.

    Shop

Oils, solvents, and used filters from the mechanic shop for oil & filter changes on traffic control trucks are managed and stored in approved containers and properly labeled. A third-party service collects and recycles these products on an as-needed basis. Manifests are gathered and stored to meet state mandates. Our traffic control trucks and equipment meet or exceed CARB requirements established by the State of California.

    Office

Water bottles, aluminum cans, cardboard, and plastic buckets are all collected in recycling bins and picked up by 3rd party recycling centers. Wastepaper products and old documents from the office are collected in a secured storage system, and service is used to pick up, shred, and recycle the paper. Emailing, texting, and digital storing of files are encouraged in all our accounting procedures to reduce paper use. AirX utilizes LED lighting for all office space and has installed Top Greener Motion Sensor Light Switches in all its individual office rooms to automatically turn off lights after an employee has left the room. Instead of water bottles, AirX invested in a water dispenser which provides both hot and cold water, and either recycled paper cups or ceramic mugs are available for use.

    Product Enhancement

AirX is continually investing in new equipment that utilizes the latest and most efficient technology available.

    Team

AirX hosts an Annual Safety and Team Building Luncheon near Lake Dixon Park. We use this time to talk about various subjects, including Safety and Sustainability. Team Members are encouraged to participate with ideas of their own. After lunch is served, we play games and do activities, including a lake/grounds clean-up project with prizes being awarded to those who participate. AirX is proud of the processes we have developed to monitor and maintain efficiency, the environment, and sustainability.

AirX in concert with its sub-consultants, is well aware of the principles of Sustainability within our industry. We make a commitment on every job and within our workforce to achieve environmental awareness and sensitivity. We accomplish this by minimizing the use of new resources and/or increasing the reuse of existing resources. Reductions in energy use are also paramount to this goal. To achieve Sustainability,

AirX provides the following General Goals:

    1. Waste reduction/recycling - Mud's byproduct of hydro excavation (potholing). AirX’s’ mud is deposited in large drying bins that are tilted slightly to allow the excess water to collect to one side and the thick, muddy spoils accumulate on the uphill side. This mud is allowed to dry naturally or is mixed with already dry material to facilitate the drying process. The dry mud (dirt) is stockpiled onsite, and once enough dirt has been accumulated, it is tested for contaminants in accordance with state requirements. AirX then gives the clean spoils to a nearby commercial grower who mixes it with mulch and other organic compounds to be utilized as potting soil. This synergy is mutually beneficial, sustainable, and cost-effective for both companies. AirX also has the ability to reuse asphalt pavement material by reheating and adding additional oils to maintain viscosity in specialized equipment designed for this purpose. Concrete and asphalt debris that is not earmarked for reuse is collected and delivered to local recycling facilities. All excess water collected during operations is deposited in settling basins for groundwater recharge or is filtered using a sand filtration process for reuse or to maintain dust control in the yard area.

Water bottles, aluminum cans, and plastic buckets are all collected in separate bins and taken to recycling centers. Wastepaper products and documents from the office are collected in a secured storage system, and service is used to pick up, shred and recycle the paper. Oils or solvents used in the AirX mechanic shop are also managed, stored in approved containers, and properly labeled. A third-party specialist collects and recycles these products on an as-needed, on-call basis.

    1. Materials management- AirX has mobile equipment that maintains temperatures need for hot asphaltic repairs on-site, allowing delivery of only the necessary asphalt material to do the job. Concrete material for sidewalk or other resurfacing is mixed on-site in quantities necessary for the specific job.
    2. Pollution prevention- All personnel understands the management of construction materials and waste at the project site. All debris is controlled and collected during and upon completion of the construction project. In addition, erosion control measures are employed as needed both during the potholing process and in our yard to contain runoff and manage dust.
    3. Product Enhancement_ AirX is continually investing in new equipment that utilizes the latest and most efficient technology available. Our trucks and equipment meet or exceed the CARB requirements in the State of California. Noise reduction through sound attenuation devices is installed on our equipment to maintain noise levels at or below threshold limits. Extensive filtration is provided on our equipment to prevent dust and air pollution. AirX is proud of these processes we have developed over the years and continues monitoring and maintaining efficiency, the environment, and sustainability. We keep an ever-watchful eye out for the latest technology and improvements that we can make to stay ahead of our game.
